This issue might seem like it's half a world away, but the reality is that this manufacturer is just the one that happened to discover the breach (many don't) and report it (again, many don't). In this case, the data stolen may include information about high level customers (like governments and large corporations) and top-secret engineering schematics for weapons systems and naval platforms. These are multi-million (more likely billion) dollar companies that really must invest a few hundred thousand (or a couple million) into better network security and, as a must, data encryption.
